What Symbol is Heat On Air Conditioner?

heat symbol on your AC

The heat symbol on air conditioners is one of the most common symbols used by appliance manufacturers. If you’re wondering what the heat symbol looks like for your specific brand, this article will help.

Central Air Conditioning (CAC) units are used in homes across America and around the world to keep people cool in hot weather. The most commonly known symbols for different types of appliances are often associated with things like gas or electric water heaters, washers and dryers, dishwashers, ovens and stoves, microwaves, etc. However, they can also be found on AC units like window-mounted units or large central AC systems in office buildings or schools.

If you’re looking for information about the air conditioner symbols on your unit, this article will provide you with all the information you’re looking for. While checking your AC unit, make sure to check whether it’s electric or gas-powered. If you cannot tell by looking at it, look for a label somewhere on the machine. For home units, this is usually found inside an access panel near the thermostat; however, if you do not feel comfortable doing this because of a lack of experience or knowledge about these types of machines, don’t hesitate to call a professional from your local HVAC company in order to avoid any serious damage.

In general, there are 5 main types of heat symbols used across different brands and models:

(1) The sun heater symbol (used mainly by Frigidaire):

(2) The electric heater symbol (used mainly by GE and Whirlpool):

(3) The gas heater symbol (used mainly by Rheem, Ruud, and Coleman):

(4) The fireplace-type heater symbol (used mainly by Lennox):

(5) A combination of the first 4 types. This type is mostly used by Panasonic:

Knowing what each symbol means will help you determine which energy source your air conditioner uses. If it’s an electric unit, you’ll know to not use a gas flame to check its temperature. And if it’s a gas unit, don’t use an electric device to try to ignite the pilot light or anything else that might cause a spark.

Do You Use the AC Button for Heat?

No.

The AC button is used for cooling, not heating. In order to use the AC unit as a heater, you must place it in “Heat” mode manually. If your unit doesn’t have a heat mode, then it cannot be used as a heater at all.

1) Look for an “AC” label on your unit.

2) If there is an “AC” label on your unit, then it has air conditioning and cooling modes and cannot be used as a heater.

3) If you don’t see an “AC” label, then it’s most likely an electric device that cannot function as a heater. Instead of using the symbol for heating, look at the shape of the symbols in order to determine which product you’re looking at:

4) For example: if you drew lines from each corner to make a square shape, like this:

Then your product would be one of these four heaters: (1) The sun heater symbol; (2) The electric heater symbol; (3) The gas heater symbol; or (4) The fireplace-type heater symbol.

5) If you drew lines from 2 opposite corners of your product to make an L shape, like this: Then your product would be one of these three heaters: (1) A combination of the first 4 types; (2) An electric heater; or (3) A gas heater.

How do I Set My AC to Heat Mode?

To set the air conditioner to “Heat” mode, you must first make sure it’s not already in “Cool” or “Fan” mode. To turn the unit off, press and hold down the Ac button until a beep is heard (about 3 seconds). If your A/C unit has multiple modes on the same side of the switch, then it will most likely have

  • Fan
  • Cool
  • Dry
  • Auto-Heat etc…

Always check for any labels on your unit before manually switching between modes.

Labelling can vary depending on product brand and model, so please reference the diagram above to determine which type of heat symbol your product uses.

Once you’ve determined that your AC does not have an automatic heating mode, simply press the button labelled ‘Heat’ which should be found somewhere on your unit. You will notice a change in temperature and a different airflow moving from outside of the unit.

If you do not see any type of symbol on your product, but instead, see symbols for air conditioning and cooling, then it is safe to assume that your unit cannot function as a heater at all – instead, use the ac button for cooling purposes only.

Note:

In order to put my Air Conditioner into Heat, do I press the A /C, Fan or Cool button?

If you have an air conditioner with a single HVAC button, then look for the Heat/Off switch. This should be labeled on your unit somewhere, so use this image as a guide.

It depends on what type of symbol is displayed next to the HVAC Button. If it’s one of these 4 types:

1) Sun Heater

2) Electric Heater

3) Gas Heater

4) Fireplace-type heater;

Then it’s most likely that pressing either the A/C or Cool button will activate the Heat mode.

Make sure that you checked the air conditioner symbols to determine which type of heat symbol it uses. If you still cannot figure out how to set it into heating mode, please call a professional from your local HVAC company.

29 A/C mode symbols

1) Air Conditioning

2) Cool

3) Fan Only

4) Heat / Off

If your unit uses one of these symbols, you can simply press either the “Heat” or “AC” button. There is no difference between these modes, only their respective temperature controls will be activated. The fan speed and airflow may change depending on which mode you choose to be in.

Be sure that you’ve checked the air conditioning symbols to ensure that it does not have an automatic heat cycle – if it does, then use the ac button for cooling purposes only! Rather than pressing any buttons described above, your unit may require a different heat function: Press the “Fan” button to activate a cooling ability, and you should see an air damper move – this means that your unit is using your evaporative cooler in order to provide you with cool air.

Air conditioner symbols can vary depending on product brand and model. Once you’ve determined that your AC does not have an automatic heating mode, simply press the button labeled ‘Heat’ which should be found somewhere on your unit.

You will notice a change in temperature and a different airflow moving from outside of the unit. If there is no heat function or heat symbol displayed next to the AC/cool HVAC Button, then it’s most likely that your unit is only meant for cooling purposes. In this case, do not put it into a heating cycle as it may cause severe damage to the unit. Please reference this article on how to turn off an ac if you feel that your product does not have a manual heat function.
