Miami public supports David Beckham proposed football stadium

Football superstar David Beckham has taken a major step towards securing a stadium deal for his professional Miami soccer team. Miami voters, voting on 6 November 2018, expressed their approval for the project.
Currently, city officials have permission to negotiate a no-bid lease deal for the stadium. Beckham wishes to build on a former public golf course. Additionally, Beckham’s group plans to build hotel and retail space in the area, estimating to generate $3.6m for the city annually.

“I started this dream five and a half years ago … to bring a team to Miami, to bring a team to this great city,” stated Beckham at a rally. “To bring a team to you, the people. We’ve had some speed bumps along the way.”

“We’ve proved to the world that persistence, patience, makes things happen,” Beckham said. “We are going to bring a championship winning team, we are going to bring great players, we are going to create homegrown talent.”

Beckham, formerly the captain of the English team, has dubbed his new professional football team Club Internacional de Futbol Miami. Also known as Inter Miami, the team is signified by a black-and-pink crest.

Currently known as the Melreese Country Club, the site resides right next to Miami International Airport. Beckham’s proposed complex includes a 25,000-seat stadium, a 23-hectare park, a hotel, shopping precinct and public sports grounds. These structures will be designed by local architecture firm Arquitectonica.

Despite the positive vote, there is still much to negotiate for Beckham’s group, as the vote has not confirmed the public park. Additionally, the project courts several critics. In particular, Golfers have requested the preservation of the golf course. Meanwhile, some Miami residents have filed legal challenges stating the city has a responsibility to get fair market value when selling or leasing property.

Nevertheless, this is a big step for Beckham. The football icon has been attempting to bring a team to Miami since 2013, the same year he retired. If negotiations succeed, architects project to complete Miami Freedom Park and Soccer Village in 2021.

The team is expected to begin playing in 2020. It be the region’s first in the soccer league since Fort Lauderdale-based Miami Fusion.
