Down in Melbourne, the use of a swimming pool is reduced to the warmer months of late spring to autumn. What can be done with this space for the other six months of the year when the swimming pool is not in use? With consideration to the steep rising value of land, this project had revolved around ways to utilise external spaces, in order for it to have multiple functions.
The Allplastics architectural and building division had provided SAAJ Design in Melbourne a creative application by using scratch resistant, anti-slip, and translucent lightweight STAGE 40 prep core panels.
The solution was to configure the edge of the pool in such a way that it accepts aluminium coloured joists (that span full width). The STAGE 40 2.0m x 1.0m panels from Allplastics, generally used for Rock stage platforms, span across the joists and the ‘floor’ of the pool. Along with the terrace and via two ¼ of a tonne steel glass gates, the exterior pavilion joins the pool to create a large open floor plate (approximately 14m long x 9.0m wide).
As a result of this, a trafficable platform is created to allow many possibilities during non-swimming seasons (mini tennis, mini basketball, bike riding, parties, etc). The translucent flooring options are also available in standard panel sizes of 2m x 1m x 40mm thick (which can be lifted by one person).
A typical ‘suburban lawn’ has been fabricated as a moveable platform over the pool. Equipped with LED lighting beneath, an astonishing ambience can easily be created.
STAGE40 panels will support 400kg/m2. For more information, click here.
